(First reported Tesla Cybertruck accident results in only ‘minor’ injury)

On Thursday afternoon in California, a Toyota Corolla collided with a Cybertruck.

The California Highway Patrol verified to The Verge that units responded to a two-vehicle collision on SR 35 (Skyline Boulevard) after Reddit user boddhya uploaded two photos of a Cybertruck crash. It happened about 2:05PM local time in this region south of Page Mill Road, which Google Maps shows as Palo Alto, and involves a 2023 Tesla Cybertruck carrying three persons that seems to have been hit by a 2009 Toyota Corolla driven by a 17-year-old.

Tesla’s Cybertruck delivery event aroused concerns about the vehicle’s design and what would happen if it collided with another vehicle or a pedestrian. Fortunately, no one appears to have been seriously injured as a result of this occurrence.

According to our preliminary investigation, a Toyota Corolla was going south on SR-35 southbound, south of Page Mill Road, at an unknown speed, when the driver veered to the right for unknown reasons and impacted a gravel embankment on the right shoulder. The Toyota then re-entered the road, drove over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, and collided with a Tesla Cybertruck driving north on SR-35.

The only injury mentioned in the CHP announcement is a potential minor injury to the Cybertruck driver, who rejected medical treatment, and it does not appear that the Tesla was driving in autonomous mode. The weather has been described as overcast and rainy.

The photographs on Reddit show considerable damage to the front end of the Corolla. Dashcam footage released on YouTube also shows the driver’s side and front of the Corolla as the driver approaches the crash. Although we can’t see the front of the Cybertruck, both sides and the back don’t appear to have received the same amount of damage, despite the deployment of side-curtain airbags. The photographs on Reddit show considerable damage to the front end of the Corolla. While the truck lacks the insignia of a “release candidate,” we didn’t notice any “Foundation Series” engraving, so it’s unclear if this is a customer-delivered vehicle or something else.
